Executive curator: Lu Chuan
Li Zhenhua 2016
Lu Chuan is regarded as one of the co-curators as she is responsible for coordinating Animation in Space and runs the Special Screening program at Artron Art Centre.
Her role should be considered as an executive curator since this role usually originates from the organizing committee. Since this role provides support for the entire project, it generally requires an individual to work full time and handle issues from various fields professionally.
For the role of executive curator, execution always comes first and the person must possess excellent communication skills, a thorough understanding of project execution as well as practical skills such as media promotion, on-site construction, project scheduling, guest reception and event management. All of the aforementioned elements are part of the execution whereas the curatorial side relates to an understanding of these specific tasks in terms of knowledge and concepts. This role of execution can also be attributed to a project manager and project producer. The executive curator completes his/her job by understanding and analyzing the curatorial content. In this context, the executive curator is also the co-curator.
Unlike the role of co-curator, the executive curator acts as the intermediary between the artistic director and other curators, keeping everyone, including the artists, informed about the progress of construction and the installation of artworks. The executive curator also keeps the public informed about the overall image and format of the exhibition. This person brings an exhibition into fruition. The role of executive curator is particularly significant when the exhibition deals with many professional institutions and the institution of the biennale.
Originally from Xiamen, Lu Chuan is an independent curator who possesses strong organizational and communication skills while excelling in both art management and project execution. In 2015, she was involved in Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival and initiated the Axis Art Project as the founder. In 2016, Lu Chuan received the Emerging Curators Project Award from the Power Station of Art in Shanghai. She was invited to be a co-curator for the 3rd Shenzhen Independent Animation Biennale in the same year.
