A very interesting animation short. The overall style is outstanding, like an old movie. The slightly odd music and French-language dubbing, along with the light and shadows in the photography shows off the independent artistic temperament of the work. Two-dimensional figuration and three-dimensional space make up a unique narrative that is concise but vivid, especially the section that depicts the emotions of a woman who killed her husband through a dance of shadows. We can see the director’s narrative potential.
The black and white tones echo the theme and content. By means of stop motion animation, the director has her distinctive ideas about narration! The seemingly vague rhythm to the story, the slightly obscure plot, and the calm handling to the scenes mix well together, making for the director’s unique style. We can see a young animator’s original interpretation of the language of animation.
The work portrays through animation techniques an event involving someone with a mental disorder. Within five minutes in the linear narrative structure, the director successfully deals with relationship between space and time and between the real and the psychological, with the intent of presenting an illogical psychological statement by applying the “causal relationship” of animation as a media. In terms of the method, the visual stop-motion animation and the real light and shadow, as well as the streamlined movements and genuine emotions, resonate well with one another, effectively presenting the distinctiveness in terms of formal ideas. In the expression of the themes, the narrative tone is almost plain, but its open ending opens up the psychological shadows faced by an ordinary person, effectively highlighting the dispassion of the objective world and the helplessness of a mental patient. Audiences will be provoked to think through ethics thoroughly. It is not all that common for young animation students to reflect on society and self-expression through the means of animation, this therefore deserves encouragement.
