Colors was conceived several years ago. I adopt a random and casual way to do the filming. The filming locations, the characters and their lives, all together, become an organic whole; while my shooting and editing are disordered. The color bars spontaneously invite them in the recording, involving them in the global order or in the sequences of the works. In my eyes, this district is particularly marvelous, full of energy and power, so it is a true fact. I want to represent what I saw in a natural way: through my classification, the whole state has been framed out—that’s what I call “horizontal grid”; longitudinal grid is the color lump, or the gaps between the isolated parts. It combines the isolation and zoom-in. I shoot whatever appears in front of the camera: all the images are indifferent. This random choice is nature and original, which relates to their disordered life style. Thus, as for me, what I have done in the whole procedure including shooting, editing, the grids and final representation, is rather useful and meaningful in the installation. Colors, 2013, nine-channel video installation, Courtesy Liu Wei studio
